Transformative Travel

This is travel as transformation: intimate, intentional, and alive with discovery.

We are not, any of us, entirely who we think we are.

The preferences, reactions, and habits we mistake for our essential self are largely inherited — shaped by culture, family, and years of unconscious repetition. Not fixed. Not permanent. Constructed.

And what is constructed can be gently, deliberately taken apart — and rebuilt with more intention.

This is what travel, done consciously, makes possible. And it’s what makes these retreats different.

As a cultural anthropologist with decades of immersive fieldwork and deep, longstanding relationships with local communities across West Africa, Europe, and beyond, I know how to use unfamiliar landscapes and cultures as mirrors. When we step outside our habitual world, the parts of ourselves we couldn’t see at home suddenly come into focus.

Encountering a culture that values presence over planning, or music where multiple rhythms dance together without losing each other — these aren’t just interesting experiences. They’re invitations to see your own conditioning more clearly, and to imagine moving through the world differently.

Each retreat begins with unwinding. Morning meditation, contemplative yoga, dharma teachings, time in nature. Space to simply arrive.

From there, for those who choose it, a deeper immersion becomes available — learning a traditional art form, cooking with local families, walking alone through an unfamiliar landscape, contributing to community projects. Not as tourism. As practice. Real immersion, with people who welcome us not as visitors but as guests.

When you return home, the work isn’t over — it’s just beginning. Integration takes time, and ongoing support through coaching, contemplative practice, and community helps you stay on track.

You come home not just rested — but subtly, meaningfully different.

All retreats are designed with ecological consciousness — treading lightly while going deep. Small groups. Carefully curated. Deeply human.

Current and upcoming destinations include southern France, Bali, and West Africa. Each location offers its own particular kind of awakening.

PRAISE FOR LISA’S TRANSFORMATIVE TRAVEL EXPERIENCES

“I was a student on a field school in Belgrade, Serbia 2015. The program and time I spent working with Dr. Feder was one of the most memorable and impactful study abroad programs of my undergraduate degree. One area of particular importance to me was Dr. Feder’s introduction of meditation/reflection into a daily routine as part of ethnographic fieldwork. So much of research and classroom studies are focused on production, and there can be an enormous amount of stress that grows from this. By leading us through such reflective exercises Dr. Feder demonstrated that it was ok to take time for yourself; in fact, this could be the most beneficial part of one’s day.

Another aspect to Dr. Feder’s approach to teaching was in her encouragement for us as students to take risk. This is something that I find to be lacking in the formalized setting of a typical university classroom. Dr. Feder’s unwavering support meant that this controlled freedom not only helped in building the confidence I had in my own abilities to perform fieldwork in the future, but also gave me the courage to take risks in my writing and research. I am convinced that Dr. Feder’s encouragement has helped me transition from being a good student to one capable of performing serious academic research”
