West African Rhythms as a Practice of Mindful Listening and Collective Creation
African music and mindfulness workshop on November 28 from 19:30 to 22:00 at Shivalaya Studio, Marseille.
This workshop weaves together West African music and mindfulness practice in an experience that is both joyful and contemplative. We begin with a grounding meditation in silence, then awaken the body through rhythm and movement. You will learn to play traditional West African patterns on instruments such as the balafon, djembe, and other percussion—no musical experience required.
Each person plays a different pattern, and together these patterns interlace to form a complete song. By focusing on your own rhythm while deeply listening to those around you, you’ll discover how individual attention and collective harmony support one another. The workshop closes with a time for reflection and meditation, creating space to welcome whatever emerges when we truly listen—to ourselves, to others, and to what we create together.
